Reading the symbols
- The ten swords — a single sword in the back is already more than enough to be fatal. Ten of them is less about the scale of the damage than a device for underlining the plain fact that it is over.
- The figure lying face down — not resisting, not struggling, completely slack. This is not a situation calling for more endurance to be squeezed out; it is one where enduring is no longer required.
- The dark sky and the light on the horizon — most of the picture is deep darkness, yet along one edge of the horizon a yellow dawn is spreading. A hint that the darkest moment is also the moment the night is ending.
- The still sea — the quiet after the storm has gone through. It also means the big wave has already come and passed once.
- The number 10 — in the Swords suit, ten shows up as excess rather than completion. Just as far more swords are planted than were ever needed, this card shows a phase that has ended to overflowing.
Upright means a situation that has closed completely, with nothing left to endure and nothing left to postpone. Ironically, this point is the most painful and the most unambiguous at the same time, because there is no longer any need to wonder what else might be tried. Reversed means you have already passed that bottom and are slowly getting back up. Less a full recovery than a signal that the worst phase is behind you and all that is left from here is building back up.

- Study & Exams — Upright is a period when a long stretch of exam preparation or a particular course comes to a complete end. Reversed is when you move past a poor run and slowly rebuild the basics.
Read as today’s fortune, upright is closer to a day when a hard passage or a source of stress finally ends for good. Accepting that this phase is over comes before trying to force out more endurance. Reversed means the hardest time has already gone by, so starting again from small steps beats rushing yourself.
Combinations that change the reading
When other cards land in the same spread, the weight of the Ten of Swords shifts a great deal. If the Death card sits beside it, for instance, the message that the matter is already finished becomes that much clearer, and at the same time it can be read as saying a new phase is not far off.
