The Knight of Swords in the Rider-Waite deck stands in sharp contrast to the other court cards. The Page stands on a hill scanning his surroundings, the Queen sits on her throne and reflects, the King holds his seat looking straight ahead — the Knight is the only one riding at a full gallop. The horse’s mane and the plume on the knight’s helmet stream hard backward, and even the dark clouds and scattering birds in the background are drawn as though they cannot keep up with the speed.
In the growth sequence of the court cards, the Knight comes right after the Page. Where the Page was the stage of observing information and learning from it, the Knight is the stage of taking that learning into the field.
