The Knight of Pentacles is the slowest of the four knights, and the one who goes all the way to the end. While the Knight of Wands gallops flat out, the Knight of Cups glides along unhurried on his swan and the Knight of Swords charges like a storm, the Knight of Pentacles keeps his black horse at a standstill and gazes quietly at the single coin in his hand. He looks stopped, but that is in fact this knight’s method. Of the four knights, only the Knight of Pentacles is drawn with his horse standing still. That is not incidental staging but a device that shows the nature of the earth element exactly as it is. Wands (fire) stands for speed, Cups (water) for flow, Swords (air) for the judgment of a moment; Pentacles (earth) stands for being packed down and for lasting. In the court hierarchy a Knight originally means action, charge, speed — but meeting the earth element turns that drive from an explosive gallop into dogged persistence.
