In the traditional Rider-Waite deck the Ten of Pentacles is filled out with an old man seated at the gate, two dogs that pass by without recognizing him, a young couple absorbed in conversation, and between them a child playing with one of the dogs. Coats of arms are carved into the wall behind them, and above it the ten coins are arranged in a pattern resembling the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. That arrangement is not incidental. It is a device for showing that the material realm of the Pentacles can begin with one person at the Ace and expand all the way out to the largest unit there is — family and lineage — at the 10. In the Minor Arcana the number 10 means completion, but it also means full to the point where the next cycle has to begin: a number where surplus and completion sit together.
