In the Rider-Waite deck the woman stands ringed by eight swords, blindfolded and loosely bound — yet look closely and the gap between two of the swords is wide enough for a person to walk straight through. The ground underfoot is mud, and far off on a hill there stands a castle. It is not that no safe place exists; it is only that you cannot see it while the blindfold is on.

• The eight swords — less a set of bars around the body than the several strands of negative thought tightening around the mind. The blades are sharp, but they are only standing there; they never actually pierce her.
• The loose knots — the rope around her hands and feet is not pulled tight. The room to work herself free has already been given, if she decides to use it.
• The blindfold — the real obstacle in this card is not the swords but the cut-off view itself. What stops her from seeing is fear, not reality.
• The castle in the background — a hint that the place she is heading is not somewhere beyond the horizon. It is close enough to reach in a few steps.
• The number 8 with Swords (Air) — in the Swords suit, eight shows up not as speed and mastery but as stalling, thought circling fast in the same spot. The fatigue of judgment felt in card 7 has hardened here into the conclusion that she cannot do it.

If it comes up upright, much of the frustration you are feeling right now most likely comes from the line you drew yourself rather than from outside conditions. Real walls exist too — regulations, contracts, the structure of an organization — but what makes you put your hands down in front of that wall is the conclusion you reached in advance, that trying will not work.
