Symbols and the number

A merchant in a red robe holds a set of scales in one hand and coins in the other, handing them out to two people kneeling in front of him. The scales show that this giving is not a spontaneous flush of pity but the result of weighing and considering. The two kneeling figures are on the receiving side, yet the composition puts them at eye level with the merchant, so it reads less as one-way charity than as circulation inside a relationship. In any suit, 6 is the place where harmony is found again after the conflict and lack of 5. If the Six of Wands is the harmony of sharing a victory with other people and the Six of Cups the harmony of sharing memories, then the Six of Pentacles, an earth card, appears as harmony mediated by material things — fair give and take.

Upright meaning

Upright is the state of the scales sitting level. Giving that moves back and forth naturally, with neither the giver nor the receiver carrying a burden or a sense of debt. It is not restricted to money. Sharing know-how, making time for someone, putting how you feel into words — every form of give and take belongs here. What matters is that it keeps circulating instead of pooling on one side.

Reversed meaning

Reversed is the state of the scales tipped over. Someone keeps only giving and someone keeps only receiving, and the weight settles onto the relationship. Or the settlement was made on terms that were never fair to begin with. If this card comes up reversed, it is time to take the scales back out and look at whether the current give and take is genuinely balanced.

Readings by situation

  • Money — Upright sees money you lent coming back, or fair reward arriving for the effort you put in. If you have some room to spare, sharing it around makes for good circulation too. Reversed is a period when a settlement is made unfairly, or money you are owed does not arrive and quietly eats at you.
  • Relationships — Upright means a warm relationship where the care and consideration going each way stay balanced. Reversed, one side keeps giving or carrying the load and hurt feelings build up.
  • Business — Upright is a period of building trust with your partners on fair terms and mutual benefit. Reversed is where a deal structure that disadvantages one side can cause trouble, so your settlement terms need another look.
  • Marriage — Upright is a period when housework and financial contribution balance out fairly. Reversed tips the load onto one spouse until resentment builds, so the roles need adjusting again.
  • Today’s fortune — Upright is a day with a warm current of helping and sharing running through it. Reversed is a day when one-sided consideration can leave you feeling short-changed, so it is fine to decline an unreasonable request politely.

The one piece of advice this card offers

The advice the Six of Pentacles gives is simple: do not take your eyes off the scales. Giving is not a problem in itself, and neither is receiving. The problem is when the balance has been tipping one way for a long time and nobody has noticed. Which side of the scales am I mostly standing on in this relationship? Now and then it is worth taking them out and checking.
