Five of Pentacles Tarot Card Meaning — Upright, Reversed, Money & Health
Why the Five of Pentacles is not simply an unlucky card, what it means upright and reversed, and how it reads for money, housing, health and relationships.
Ask which card in the deck chills you most on the picture alone, and a lot of people pick this one. On a snowy night, a figure on crutches and a figure in thin clothes walk along side by side. Treating this card as “the most ominous card in tarot” is a common misreading, though. There is clearly a way out drawn into the picture — the two of them simply pass it with their backs turned.
A closer look at the picture
- The falling snow — a period of material contraction, when body and mind both draw inward.
- The two injured figures — one on crutches, one in thin clothes. Even with help urgently needed, they are enduring on their own out of pride or plain habit.
- The stained glass window above them — the building the two are walking past is a church. Which is to say that help and support already prepared for them stands right beside them.
- The number 5 — in any suit, 5 is the place on the road to completion where things shake badly for the first time: the seat of lack and conflict. Meeting the earth element of Pentacles, that shaking takes its most concrete form, material hardship.

Upright meaning
Upright, the Five of Pentacles points to a period of contraction, financially or emotionally. The key to reading the card properly, though, is not the hardship but the door standing next to it. As the stained glass window in the picture hints, this is not a sign that you have to endure the present difficulty alone. It means there is help within arm’s reach. Whether you knock on that door or walk past it stays your own choice.
Reversed meaning
Reversed is closer to the moment you finally knock. A long stretch of difficulty slowly loosens, and support or help you could not see until now comes into view. Recovery usually arrives gradually, though. Spring does not follow the minute the snow stops, so even reversed it is more realistic to accept the small help now in front of you than to expect a full recovery in a hurry.
Readings by situation
💰 Money
A period when a temporary drop in income or an unexpected expense pulls things tight. Rather than straining to solve it by yourself, the wiser move is to look first at whatever support programs or advice services are available to you. Reversed, you are coming through the tunnel of shortage and finding room to breathe again, so it is a good time to revive the habit of saving steadily, even in small amounts.
🏠 Property & Housing
A period when housing costs or poor living conditions can wear you down. It helps to look actively into what is already set up for you — public housing support, loan programs and the like. Reversed reads as coming through that difficulty and gradually putting a settled place to live back together.
🌿 Health
A period when your stamina drops and your body feels chilled and shivery. Rather than pushing through it, warming yourself up and resting enough comes first. Reversed points to a long stretch of fatigue and weakness easing, with your strength slowly coming back.
🤝 Relationships
A period when you can feel left out in a group, or simply lonely. Better to go to the one person you can be honest with than to curl up on your own. Reversed brings you out of a lonely stretch and into warm help and support.
How not to walk past the window
What the Five of Pentacles really wants to say is closer to “help is already nearby even in a hard season” than “a hard season is coming.” Whether the two figures in the picture ever did knock on the church door is not drawn on the card. Sketching the next scene is left to the person who drew it. Admitting that you are having a hard time and enduring it alone without letting it show are two different things. Not walking on with your back to the window — that is the advice this card quietly offers.
