In the traditional image the figure wears red, leans on a staff, and leaves the riverbank behind. Eight cups sit neatly stacked at his back, and yet a gap in that arrangement leaves the place looking oddly empty for somewhere on its way to completion. On the surface the number lacks nothing — 8, well along the road to 10 — yet it is the heart that never got filled. In the sky hangs a total eclipse, the moon covering the sun, hinting that this decision came out of an inner pull other people would struggle to understand. The Cups suit belongs to water, the element of emotion, relationship and intuition. Where 8 in the other suits usually means speed and mastery, in Cups it reads as a practiced kind of resolve — having felt this feeling all the way through, you move on to the next thing without looking back.
