Unlike the other three kings, the King of Cups is drawn on a throne that seems to float on a heaving sea rather than to rest on solid ground. Behind him a ship sails through a storm; off to the other side a single fish leaps clear of the water. The ship is reason moving forward without wavering in the middle of emotional turbulence, and the fish is the unconscious and the intuition, still very much alive and in motion. He holds a scepter in one hand and a cup in the other, both lightly, which says that authority and feeling coexist here without colliding. In the court cards the king is the seat of outward completion, authority and responsibility, and once the suit of emotion is set into that seat the portrait finishes as “someone who governs feeling well enough to turn that maturity into social responsibility.” It is the same maturity of water the Queen carries, but where hers turns inward, his is exercised outward.
