In the Rider-Waite deck the Knight of Wands is drawn with the staff raised high above a horse rearing on its hind legs. The tunic embroidered with salamanders carries the same fire symbol as the Page’s, but this time it is no longer something to be looked at — it is worn, and it has become the force that carries him forward. The plume on the helmet streaks in the wind, and the horse already has its forelegs driving ahead. There is not a single still element anywhere in this card.
Read court cards as stages of maturity in a person and the Knight is the seat right after the Page. The curiosity that watched and learned as the Page has now been put into action. The Knight is the point where the fire element of the Wands suit — will and drive — shows itself in its rawest form. Few cards keep the distance between thinking and doing as short as this one.
