What it actually talks about is not dying but an ending, and the new current that starts in the space it leaves behind.
A closer look at the picture
In the traditional Rider-Waite deck, a skeleton knight in black armor rides forward on a white horse. It looks like a frightening scene, but there are reversals hidden in every corner.
- The banner in the knight’s hand carries a white rose. It is a promise of clean renewal after the end.
- The sun is rising on the horizon. Not a setting sun but one climbing between two towers — the other name for an ending is a beginning.
- The knight does not stop; he advances. Kings and children are equal in front of him. The current of change goes around no one.
Despite the superstition about the number 13, in the journey of the Major Arcana card 13 comes after card 12, the Hanged Man, the card of pausing and shifting your view. Once you have sat with something long enough, the order says, it is time to tie it off and move on.

Upright, Death is the card of a major transition. It is the strength to cleanly tie off an old habit, a relationship that is over, a method that has run out of life. What matters here is that the card is much closer to “emptying” than to “losing.” Just as a room has to be cleared before new furniture comes in, Death means the tidying that makes room for a new current.
If the card comes up upright, there is one question to ask yourself. What am I still holding on to? Habit, relationship, work — whatever it is, the next chapter opens the moment you clearly end what has already ended.
Reversed — a hand that cannot let go
Reversed, Death is the state of refusing change even while knowing a transition is needed. Attachment to a connection that is finished, insistence on a method whose time is up, the inertia of “but it is familiar.” The most common situation when reversed Death appears is that you already know the answer in your heart. The card is only pressing you to find the courage to act on it.
