The Devil Tarot Card Meaning — Upright, Reversed, Love & Money

The Devil shows you a state of being held by something, and at the same time it shows you that the chain is looser than you thought. Looking at two people chained beneath a horned figure, people usually assume they have drawn the worst card in the deck. The real subject of Major Arcana card 15, The Devil, is not ruin but noticing what has you bound.

Symbols and the number
In the traditional image, a figure with horns and bat wings sits on a large pedestal, and below it a man and a woman stand with chains around their necks. Look closely, though, and the chains are only hanging loosely — slipping a neck out would not be hard if either of them decided to. This is where the card reveals that the captivity it speaks of was not forced from outside but is a yoke of one’s own making. The inverted pentagram on the brow means that values which should point upward have tipped downward, toward matter and sensation.
The pose of the two figures is almost identical to card 6, the Lovers. If the Lovers draws the moment two people choose each other by free will, the Devil shows the shadow where that choice has hardened into obsession and dependence. The numbers connect too — 1+5=6 points back to the Lovers. The order matters as well: the Devil (15) comes immediately after Temperance (14). When balanced tuning breaks down and everything tips to one side, that is precisely the bind the Devil pictures.
Upright points to a bind that is still in progress, or one you have only just started to notice. It is a period when you feel yourself pulled too strongly toward something and still cannot cut it off. Reversed is the opposite phase, where you actually throw the chain off. It is the moment you finally realize the chain around your neck was loose all along, and walk out on your own.

- Love — Upright is a time of strong attraction that can easily spill over into obsession. Reversed is stepping out of a relationship that kept hurting you and getting yourself back.
- Money — Upright is a time when you fall easily into sweet-looking spending traps like installments and revolving credit. Reversed is cutting off the repeating card debt or overspending habit and feeling light again.
- Health — Upright is a period when your body gets dragged around by rich food or bad habits. Reversed is coming out of the habits that hurt you and getting your condition back.
- Career — Upright is a time when appetite for results or power risks pushing you into an unreasonable choice. Reversed means getting out of an unfair workplace culture or practice.
- Study & Exams — Upright is a period when the pull of distractions like games and social media shakes your focus. Reversed is breaking the loop of idleness and getting your concentration back.
The one piece of advice this card offers
The question the Devil really asks is not “what is bad” but “what am I putting a leash on myself with right now?” Just as the two figures in the picture could have slipped their chains, the moment you notice the bind, half of it is already undone. If something is dragging you around, start not by trying to destroy it but by naming it and looking at it clearly.
