In the older French Marseille tradition, Justice sat at 8 and Strength at 11, but in the Rider-Waite deck most widely used today the two swapped places, leaving Justice at 11 and Strength at 8. The reordering is said to have been made so that position 11 would line up with Libra, the scales, in the astrological correspondence table — and the fact that a single card’s number has a backstory like that suits Justice rather well, since it was always the card about clean, exact standards.

- The sword in the right hand — held straight up, the sword stands for judgment that divides clearly, with no blur. The key detail is that it stands vertical, tilted toward neither side.
- The scales in the left hand — two pans in equilibrium mean the balance of cause and effect, of what is given and what is taken. Weight is measured by facts and evidence, not by feeling.
- The seat between two pillars — Justice always sits between the two pillars, dead center. It marks a neutral position that takes nobody’s side.
- The angular composition and restrained palette — elements that give form to holding to principle without emotional wavering.

Upright — an outcome that follows the rules
Upright, Justice means effort and result lining up honestly. It shows its power especially in places with explicit standards, like contracts, evaluations and negotiations. This is a period when evidence and documentation decide the outcome rather than emotional appeals, so staying objective works in your favor.
Reversed — when the scales tip
Reversed points to standards tilted to one side, or to not receiving the share you are owed. Loopholes in a contract, an unfair evaluation, someone dodging responsibility all belong here. Rather than responding emotionally to the unfairness, it is more effective to organize your supporting evidence and calmly ask for it to be corrected.
