Strength Tarot Card Meaning — Upright, Reversed, Love & Career

The symbols in the Strength card, what it means upright and reversed, and how it reads for love, career, health and study when patience is the real power.

Strength Tarot Card Meaning — Upright, Reversed, Love & Career

The first time you see the Strength card, you tend to picture a beast being overpowered. But look closely at the picture and the woman is not forcing the lion’s jaws apart or striking it. She is simply holding it, gently, with both hands. The real power Major Arcana 8, Strength, describes is not muscle at all — it is closer to the ability to handle something fierce with a soft touch.

A closer look at the picture

  • The hands around the lion’s mouth — not a grip that pries or presses down, but hands closed gently around it. Mastery through mildness instead of force.
  • The infinity sign (∞) above her head — the same symbol that appears on the Magician shows that this strength is a lasting quality, not a single moment of subdual.
  • The white dress and the flowers — the blossoms on her belt and garland stand for purity and naturalness. The core of this card is that purity sits right next to a wild instinct.
  • The bright yellow background — if the lion stands for the instinct and impulse that need mastering, the bright light behind it is the calm awareness watching over them.
  • Her untroubled expression — not an absence of fear, but composure kept steady in the middle of fear.

Upright meaning

Upright, Strength means getting through something without fighting it head-on. Approaching gently instead of shoving, outlasting the time with patience instead of meeting emotion with emotion. It can look weak from the outside, but the power this card describes is the solidity that comes from holding out for a long time. Even with a difficult person or situation, staying calm rather than leading with feeling produces the better outcome.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, Strength shows that patience running dry. Feelings held in for too long start to show as impatience or lost confidence, and something you had been handling gently suddenly gets pushed down instead, which provokes a backlash. Like the moment the lion’s mouth slips free, there is a risk that everything stored up comes out at once. If you draw a reversal, it is better to admit you are tired than to keep enduring past your limit.

Readings by situation

💗 Love

Upright has conflict resolving through warm understanding and patience rather than emotional confrontation. The relationship deepens when you approach gently instead of pressing the other person. Reversed is a state where resentment you have been swallowing can come out all at once, so it is better to say small honest things before feeling piles up.

💼 Career

Upright is a period for handling a demanding task or a demanding boss with flexibility and calm. A steady manner earns more trust than a direct collision. Reversed can mean accumulated stress has emptied your patience and you react hastily, so asking for help rather than carrying it alone is a valid move.

🌿 Health

Upright means managing your condition by gently adjusting the ups and downs of body and mind. Activities that build flexibility suit you better than intense exercise. Reversed can mean pushing through fatigue until your stamina gives out at once, so when your body signals, rest without postponing it.

🤝 Relationships

Upright brings out your ability to work things out even with difficult people through a soft manner. This is a period when mildness is the more persuasive force. Reversed can mean holding down hurt feelings until they burst out suddenly, so speaking calmly rather than storing it helps the relationship.

📚 Study & Exams

Upright gets you past even a dull slump with quiet persistence. Filling your daily study quota without impatience is what pays off. Reversed can be a period where scores are not moving and restlessness grows, so allow yourself a breath instead of driving yourself harder.

Not removing the lion, but learning to walk with it

What sets Strength apart from other cards about overcoming is that it never tries to get rid of the thing it faces. The lion never disappears from the card — it stays right beside the woman to the end. Fear, anger and impatience are not emotions you can erase completely. The advice this card offers is not to drive that fierceness out by force, but to learn how to walk alongside it. Real courage does not come from a state where fear is gone; it comes from an attitude that keeps its calm with fear still at your side.

  • The Chariot — both are about mastery, but the Chariot is drive aimed outward and Strength is gentle patience aimed inward.
  • The Hermit — after soothing the lion outside, it becomes time to look inward alone, the way the Hermit does.
