Inside the lantern the Hermit carries, a six-pointed star is shining. That star, matter and spirit interlocked, inner and outer joined, stands for a light of wisdom he made himself rather than one somebody else lit for him. The staff in his other hand shows that experience gathered over a long journey is what holds him up now. The gray robe stripped of ornament is the posture of someone concentrating on essentials, and the snow-covered summit means a height reached alone — a solitary place, but the one with the longest view. The number 9, last of the single digits, is the stage of putting yourself in order one final time just before a cycle completes. It is the last stretch of solitary review before the turn begins with the next card, the Wheel of Fortune (10).
Upright — a light you make yourself
Upright, the Hermit means a period of pulling back from the noise outside and looking deeply into your own thinking. The emphasis falls on finding your answer somewhere quiet instead of being swept along by other people’s opinions. Insight gathered in this period sometimes comes back later as solid counsel for someone else.
Reversed — with the lantern hidden
Reversed, the Hermit shows reflection that has drifted into isolation. What you needed was time to think alone, and as that time stretched on you cut the connections around you altogether.
