In the Rider-Waite deck the Magician points one hand at the sky and the other at the ground. It is the old maxim “as above, so below” put into a picture, and it stands for the power to pull an idea in your head straight down into a result in the world. On the table in front of him lie a wand, a cup, a sword and a pentacle — the tools of all four suits. That means the Magician is not someone who has to acquire something else before he can begin; he already holds every material he needs. The infinity sign (∞) above his head marks the potential he works with as having no limit, and the red outer robe over white underclothing says this power only works fully when passion and a clean intention are present together. The number 1 means the pure potential of 0 has found a direction for the first time and taken the shape of action.
