The figures rising from their graves in answer to the trumpet are not caught in the moment of being sentenced; they are much closer to the moment of opening their eyes again.

- The angel Gabriel with the trumpet — the sound coming down from the sky is not a voice pronouncing a penalty but a call asking for an answer. You can ignore it, but once you have heard it, it is the kind of signal that has to be answered.
- The red cross on the banner — a mark of purity and spiritual housekeeping, a symbol of renewal that washes the old away.
- The figures rising from their coffins, arms spread wide — usually drawn as a man, a woman and a child together, meaning the same call reaches everyone regardless of age or circumstance. Arms spread wide is a gesture of acceptance, not refusal.
- The mountain range in the distance — the hard stretches already behind you. It also hints that the road left ahead runs gentler than the peaks you have already crossed.
The number 20 lands where you now have to answer, yourself, for how you will handle what 19, the Sun, brought brightly into view. What the light has exposed cannot be walked past as though you never saw it.

Upright, Judgement points to the moment when an answer you have been putting off has to be given. It is the strength to look back over the time behind you and use what you gathered there as the footing for an important decision. Like the figures pulling themselves upright at the sound of the trumpet, this card sends one signal: it is time to respond. Often it shows up as a scene where past effort is formally recognized — good news, an exam passed, a promotion.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, Judgement is the state of hearing the call and not quite being able to stand up. An old failure or an old wound catches you by the ankle, and you end up doubting yourself at the very moment that matters. The problem is not a shortage of ability; it is that self-reproach over things already finished is clouding your judgment. Reversed, this card offers a single piece of advice.
